I made my first quilt in 2004 and it was love at first stitch. I have been teaching quilting techniques since 2006. I am known for teaching One Block Wonder’s, of which I have made 67 so far. I am a Certified Instructor for Studio 180 Design since 2013. I am also “Island Batik Ambassador”, sharing challenges & projects and a Northcott Creators club participant using their fabulous fabrics.

My quilts have been exhibited at the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg, Virginia, The Fenimore Art Museum, and the Farmers Museum in Cooperstown, the Earlville Opera House in Earlville, NY, and the
Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute in Utica, NY.

Two of my One Block Wonders are featured in Maxine Rosenthal’s new book “One Block Wonders Around the World”. My quilt “Waves of Joy” is included in Deb Tucker’s new book “Royal Treasures” based on the Hunter
Star quilt.

I offer classes teaching the One Block Wonder technique and classes using all of Deb Tuckers Studio 180 Design Tools. You can see my workshops here – https://ifthesethreadscouldtalk.com/workshops/

Heather Kojan

May 18, 2018 by Rita

Home: Owings Mill, Maryland

I’ve been sewing since my teens and quilting for more than 25 years.

My first quilt was an Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day. Since I had a king sized bed, it made sense to me to make a king sized quilt. Go big or go home, right? That quilt was in shades of mauve and dusty blue (hello mid ’80’s!) Let’s just say my fabric tastes have changed since then!

I consider myself a modern quilter, with traditional roots. I’m the founder of the Baltimore Modern Quilt Guild and love speaking to different groups and sharing the modern aesthetic. I’m foremost a teacher. I teach modern quilting classes in local shops, guilds and shows across the country.

I’m a contributing author to the book Classic Modern Quilts and a featured quilter in The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters by Sherri Lynn Wood, and 50 Little Gifts published by Lucky Spool. You can frequently find my work in Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Magazine and Modern Patchwork Magazine.

Let’s connect! You can find me on my blog: www.heatherkojan.com or on Instagram @heatherkojan.

Please let Heather know you found her on The Quilter’s Calendar!

Leni Wiener

November 14, 2013 by Rita

Leni Levenson Wiener (2)Home: New York City, New York, USA

Leni Levenson Wiener is an art quilter, author and instructor living just outside New York City. Her work, which has been exhibited across the US and internationally, can best be described as fabric collage. Photo-realistic in nature, her themes focus mainly on the faces and body language of people caught in ordinary moments of their everyday lives.

“As a former commercial photographer, I still see the world through a camera lens. I am drawn to subjects that are photographic in nature–I like to capture a fleeting moment in the life of a stranger. I often depict an insignificant moment, but one that causes the viewer to look closely, to fill in the story, and in that way to be drawn deeper into the work.” All of Leni’s pieces begin with a photo or a combination of photos which are translated into commercially available fabric.

Leni has authored four books; Thread Painting (2007), Photo-inspired Art Quilts (2009), 3-Fabric Quilts (2011) and Pictorial Art Quilt Guidebook, which will be released in the spring of 2014.

Leni’s workshops cover color, value and print scale; how to choose the right fabrics for your art quilt; making a pattern from a photo; and then the steps required to learn her easy technique. She also gives talks on her process with an overview of her work and on finding your artistic voice. Workshops can be customized to fit the specific needs of the guild or group.

Visit Leni’s Website for information on workshops, talks and to see more of her work.

Please let Leni know you found her on The Quilter’s Calendar!
