Bonnie Langenfeld

March 14, 2021 by Rita

Home: Minnesota & Florida

My dream was to become a painter, but I found that I couldn’t control the media the way I wanted, to create realistic images. Fortunately I had always been involved in sewing as well.

That led me to traditional quilting where I was frustrated by not being able to create my version of realism in fabric. This was in the 1990s when art quilting and a myriad of new tools and fabrics became available. The best ones for me were glues for fabrics, heavy stabilizers, and hand dyed or printed fabrics that allow my imagination to ‘see’ landscape elements in them.

At this time I also started playing with free motion stitching, and invented ways to add details to my landscapes with just two stitches.

My history includes having been shown in galleries, art shows, quilt shows, private commissions, making presentations and teaching (both virtually and live).

I feel very fortunate to have this second career as teacher, having taught primary students for many years, and now can teach my techniques anywhere. Currently I live in Cape Coral, FL in the winter and spend summers in Eden Prairie, MN, close to family!

Virtual Presentation: The Art of Realistic Fabric Art. In this 45-60 minute presentation, the essential art elements and techniques for realism are covered, e.g. using lines of perspective and use of color for depth. It explains much what I have developed over several years specifically regarding fabric choices and stitching techniques, as well as  how to construct a fabric picture, and much more. Many pictures of my in-progress work, and completed pieces are shown. It’s laced with humor and enthusiasm. Audience questions are welcome. A trunk show is included. $350. (March 2021)

Nancy Prince

March 1, 2021 by admin

Home: Orlando, Florida

Nancy is an award winning thread painting quilt artist, author and international quilting teacher. Twenty one years ago she was looking for a way to add dimension and more interest to her quilts and to her delight that was when she discovered thread painting.

Nancy has won numerous quilting awards with her competitive quilts including Best of Show at the International Quilt Festival in Houston as well as Best of World at the Mancuso show in New England. Her most favorite awards have been the 20 plus Viewer’s Choice awards at various national shows.

Nancy’s anyone-can-do-it teaching attitude has encouraged students for the past 18 years. She is totally addicted to thread painting and her enthusiasm in workshop is contagious! Students comment on her commitment to her one-on-one attention and her upbeat attitude. She excels in taking the mystique out of thread painting making it easy for anyone to master.

Nancy has used camera technology for the past 18 years in her on-site workshops and she now uses the same technology for her Zoom workshops. The camera technology gives an up-close view of each machine demo of the project assuring that students have a front row seat in all workshops. Color slides are used after each sewing machine demo to augment the thread painting demo assuring the student has a good grasp on each step.

Nancy offers traditional on-site workshops as well as virtual workshops. Nancy has had much success transferring from on-site to virtual workshops due to her attention to detail and perseverance in learning the “Zoom curve”. She enjoys interacting with her students throughout the day. Fun and laughter are main components in her classroom as well as sharing the knowledge she has acquired over the past 21 years. Students in Zoom workshops at Road to California and other shows have commented
on how well her Zoom workshops are organized.

Workshop: Thread Painted Landscapes Woodlands – Nancy is known for her Thread Painted Landscapes and the Woodlands version is no exception. This workshop starts with custom printed fabric which virtually guarantees success right from the start. Teaching her thread painting techniques is paramount in all workshops. Of course thread is the main star but weight of thread, importance of value in thread selection, thread manufacturers, solid thread vs variegated are all topics of discussion. Kits are a part of each workshop and students comment on the attention to detail in her step-by-step color illustrated booklet included with each kit. This workshop like most of Nancy’s workshop is geared toward all levels of experience.

Lecture: Some 20 plus years ago Nancy picked up a little wooden hoop, a piece of stabilizer and some thread and that moment sent her on a totally unexpected yet enjoyable journey. With all these years of making thread painted quilts, there is a story to tell. The lecture will demonstrate her thread painting techniques, some fun and humorous stories and lastly a trunk slide show of quilts from her first thread painted quilt to her latest competitive quilt.

Nancy would love to share thread painting or thread sketching with your guild. To learn more about Nancy visit her website at www.nancyprince.com To view Nancy’s virtual workshops please go to http://www.nancyprince.com/workshop-lectures/virtual

Julia Graves

Home: Leesburg, Virginia

Julia Graves is a Zoom-experienced lecturer and teacher on a variety of quilting subjects, with a focus on color and design that are applicable to all your future quilts.

Her Amazing Abstracts class teaches how to use color and value to create amazing movement and drama.  Her traditional piecing classes that focus on color and value include Tricks with Transparencies, Luscious Luster, Rainbow Drops and Shimmering Triangles.   Other fun classes include creating your own gemstone in Gemstone Bling and Color Exploration where we play with color to see the effects we can achieve.  She has lectures on Color, Design, Landscape Quilts, Personalizing and Memory Quilts, Community and Faith in Fiber and her very popular My Quilting Journey.

Let There Be Light

Julia’s two most popular bookings are:

  • Color Exploration Lecture – This lecture will discuss how to select beautiful color combinations for your quilts and provide tips on how to fix color combinations that just don’t seem to be working.  Includes a slide show and trunk show illustrating classic color combinations and fascinating color illusions.
  • Amazing Abstracts Class – Create an abstract quilt that has amazing movement and drama. Go from inspiration to a simple sketch, then have fun “coloring” your sketch with bits of fabric to create a mock-up of your design – see before you sew!  The design is gridded and blocks are foundation pieced using an easy sew and flip method with room for creativity and improvisation.  Lots of discussion of design principles and how to use color and value to create the drama and desired effects.

Julia started her quilting business, Special Occasion Quilts LLC, in 2007 and teaches, lectures, designs patterns, makes commission quilts, longarms for others and sells & services APQS longarm machines.  She won Best Longarm Machine Workmanship Wall Quilt Category at the 2016 Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival, is a Gem Affiliate teaching the gorgeous gem patterns by MJ Kinman – Textile Artist, has had quilts published in books by Gloria Loughman, Katie Pasquini-Masopust and MJ Kinman, was an Artist in Residence at Empty Spools in 2019, and will be teaching at Empty Spools in 2021 and 2022 and Hudson River Valley Art Institute in 2022.

Julia has been sewing since she was ten and always loved fabric, needle arts and the entire creative process.  She did her apprenticeship as a quilter by making a quilt for each of her nieces and nephews (and thinks she should have counted them before making this promise – there were 32!).  She has since made more quilts than she can count, many for charity, and is partial to scrap quilts and working with color to achieve amazing results.

Her work has been purchased and installed in institutions such as Epic Corporation in Madison, WI, and the Milton Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA.

Rachel specializes in improvisational piecing, vibrant landscapes, couching (stitching yarn to quilt surface) and teaching of basic design elements. She has experience giving online presentations and classes.

Having grown up in Japan, this influence is evident in her style and use of kimonos, silks, ikats, hand dyed and batik fabrics. She includes traditional techniques of quilting as well as her own innovative materials and methods to achieve her desired designs.

Lecture Topic and Description

From Inspiration to Art Process

PowerPoint lecture presentation on the topic of where I find inspiration for my art: Other artists, photographs, influences from life experiences. I include process photos and discuss how to make effective quilts using art concepts such as limiting color palette, simplifying the background, using repetition of line, shapes, value and color throughout the work.

Workshop – Strata Quilt

We will do curved piecing of coordinated hand dyed and commercial fabrics for the background. Easy free motion and walking foot quilting designs will be introduced. Organza circles will be stitched to the surface with single or double needle applique. Yarns will be couched to the surface for movement and definition. Kit optional – $30.

Workshop – Artful Couching

Learn the art of couching with yarns to create texture, flow and extra pizzazz. This is a full day class. We will first create our quilt sandwich and learn some quilting designs created using the walking foot. We will then focus on mastering couching techniques. Students will bring a striped batik or gradient fabric and coordinating yarn to make this 18″ x 45″ table runner size quilt. This class will show you the many ways to use couching for definition and sparkle, by incorporating a variety of cording, yarn and metallic threads in your work.

Ellen Lindner

July 18, 2020 by admin

Home: Melbourne, Florida

A former flight instructor, Ellen didn’t try her hand at art quilting until her forties.  After learning the basics, she quickly began to experiment, and over the course of years, developed her own fabric collage technique. Now using her teaching skills at a lower altitude, she teaches online and in person, as well as via her episodes on Quilting Arts. Ellen has also written two eBooks and several articles.

Her classes are perfect for traditional quilters who want to try art quilts, but are looking for direction. In some classes the students learn a technique, such as Double Reverse Applique. But most cover an artistic concept, such as color or design. Some of these actually have “artistic courage” included in the supply list! Ellen thinks these are the absolute best classes, because her students learn so much.
