Zoom Ready

Ellen Lindner

July 18, 2020 by admin

Home: Melbourne, Florida

A former flight instructor, Ellen didn’t try her hand at art quilting until her forties.  After learning the basics, she quickly began to experiment, and over the course of years, developed her own fabric collage technique. Now using her teaching skills at a lower altitude, she teaches online and in person, as well as via her episodes on Quilting Arts. Ellen has also written two eBooks and several articles.

Her classes are perfect for traditional quilters who want to try art quilts, but are looking for direction. In some classes the students learn a technique, such as Double Reverse Applique. But most cover an artistic concept, such as color or design. Some of these actually have “artistic courage” included in the supply list! Ellen thinks these are the absolute best classes, because her students learn so much.

Irene Blanck

July 18, 2020 by admin

I live in Melbourne, Australia. I have been quilting for the last 30 years but only started designing since 2007. I have done all sorts of quilting but my love is needleturn applique.

I enjoy teaching classes in all aspects of needleturn applique and instilling in quilters the love for needleturn applique. I try and make my classes fun and stress-free. I like to think of my classes as “sit and sew” sessions – or “mini quilt-ins” – where we have a fun and relaxing day, chatting to friends as well as learning a new technique or perfecting on techniques.

In my classes I teach all the short-cuts which I’ve learnt over the years – mostly from making mistakes and doing things over and over again. I have been extremely fortunate to be able to teach in Australia, the US and Europe. Quiltmania published a book of my quilts in 2015 – titled “Focus on Applique” and I think this helped launch my international career.

I recently watched Irene do a trunk show via Zoom, then a demo on her clam shell hand applique techniques and she was wonderful.

She is very entertaining, her quilts are gorgeous and she clearly demonstrated and explained the entire process she uses, from start to finish, for her clam shell quilts.

She was actually onscreen for almost two hours, laughing and joking with us through it all. She even gave us a sneak peek of what she’s working on now, a 2021 applique BOM that is stunning. Book her soon, she’s an expert at live streaming and a wonderful teacher.

Hire Irene soon before her schedule books up, your guild will love her! She’s very experienced at presenting virtually via Zoom and she’ll inspire you with her gorgeous quilts and easy to follow tips.~Marguerita

“Are you curious about paper piecing?  Do you and paper piecing already have a love/hate relationship?  Do you love the accuracy you achieve, but hat the process of getting there?  Well, “No More Tears”™ will change that to a LOVE relationship.  You’ll not only learn about the basics of paper piecing but also how the method will give you precise results in half the time of the old way of paper piecing.  Oh, and by the way, You don’t need any specialty paper which means you can use regular copy paper.  I’ve also got a few tricks up my sleeve for orienting the next piece of fabric to be sewn so that it fits every time, and you’ll learn how to join your individual blocks with your points matching on the first try.  But most of all, I create a relaxed, fun environment in which to learn…be prepared to laugh.”

I’ve been teaching my method since 2004 and have become part of the Mancuso Quiltfest faculty, spreading the word nationally.  So, please, come join me for a class or two.”

Janice E. Frisch

Photo by Tall and Small Photography

Home: Bowling Green, Ohio

Janice E. Frisch is a quilt historian, folklorist, and published author who has been quilting and researching quilts for over 20 years.

Her research on European influences in early American quilting has been published by the Modern Quilt Guild, the International Quilt Museum in the book, American Quilts in the Industrial Age, 1760–1870, edited by Patricia Cox Crews and Carolyn Ducey, and in Quilt Studies: The Journal of the British Quilt Study Group.

She offers classes on free motion quilting and labeling your quilts and her illustrated lectures include:

The History of the American Block-Style Quilt

This illustrated lecture explores British and Dutch patchwork from the eighteenth century to identify patterns and motifs used by colonial and early-American quilters. It also examines how early Americans adapted the layout of their quilts, moving from a predominantly medallion-style arrangement to the repeating block-style that is thought of as iconically American today. Participants will come away with a clear understanding of colonial and early Euro-American patchwork styles and lots of inspiration to use in their own artwork today.

What’s in a Name? Documenting Quilts of Yesterday and Today

This talk shares some of the quilt history mysteries that Janice has unraveled (or failed to unravel) to highlight the kinds of information you should include when you are labeling your quilts. The lecture ends with practical considerations for today’s quilters: What tools are available to help you label your quilts and how do you use them? What level of information constitutes the bare minimum to put on a label and what is the ideal? And why does it all matter anyway?

For more about Janice please visit her website: Tangible Culture and contact her at tangiblecultureofficial @ gmail.com (remove spaces) Virtual Presentation fee is $400 (March 2021)

Heather Kojan

May 18, 2018 by Rita

Home: Owings Mill, Maryland

I’ve been sewing since my teens and quilting for more than 25 years.

My first quilt was an Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day. Since I had a king sized bed, it made sense to me to make a king sized quilt. Go big or go home, right? That quilt was in shades of mauve and dusty blue (hello mid ’80’s!) Let’s just say my fabric tastes have changed since then!

I consider myself a modern quilter, with traditional roots. I’m the founder of the Baltimore Modern Quilt Guild and love speaking to different groups and sharing the modern aesthetic. I’m foremost a teacher. I teach modern quilting classes in local shops, guilds and shows across the country.

I’m a contributing author to the book Classic Modern Quilts and a featured quilter in The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters by Sherri Lynn Wood, and 50 Little Gifts published by Lucky Spool. You can frequently find my work in Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Magazine and Modern Patchwork Magazine.

Let’s connect! You can find me on my blog: www.heatherkojan.com or on Instagram @heatherkojan.

Tammy Silvers

May 2, 2018 by Rita

Home: Acworth Georgia, USA

I design under the label Tamarinis, and specialize in – well, pretty much fun, inspiring projects. Guided improv and paper piecing patterns offer a modern spin on classic designs.

I am a Certified Studio 180 instructor, offering Tucker University sessions, as well as lectures, classes and workshops on Studio 180 tools, techniques and patterns and a certified Aurifilosopher. I teach regularly at Stitch’n Quilt, in Mableton GA.

I have been published in several quilting magazines and have multiple fabric lines with Island Batik.

My lecture options, supported with tons of quilt examples, focus on color and fabric choices, and how selections can transform a project.

Interrogating Your Quilt:
Don’t be nice about it – force that fabric to talk to you! Get the real info on how it can work for you to help you achieve your “quilt” vision. This humor-laden lecture focuses on getting the most from your fabric choices and how fabric can (and does) influence the finished quilt! Supported by plenty of quilt examples from my retinue of quilts – good and bad!

Seeing Double:
Ever wonder – what would this quilt look like if I made it in another color way? If I used plaids and stripes instead of florals? Well, I can’t tell you what EVERY quilt would look like, but we can explore some practical examples together! In a fun format, we will compare quilts made in florals versus batiks, reproduction fabrics versus crisp modern prints, brights versus pastels. Gather inspiration and insight into the choices for your next project!

Auriphilosophy Lecture

Aurifilosophy is…
— The search for Knowledge and Truth, especially about the nature and behavior of Aurifil thread.
— A program designed to unlock the mysteries of thread, educate, inspire, and enable all users to achieve brilliant results.

We’ve trained and certified a team of dynamic, charismatic, and brand-loyal designers, artisans, and educators to offer Aurifilosophy using a structured presentation and thread demonstration. Aurifilosophers will cover thread basics, including information on weight and ply, spool positioning, needle recommendations, and tension settings. They’ll offer helpful tips and tricks, share projects and photos aimed to inspire and expand your use of Aurifil threads, and will gift each program attendee with a bag of exclusive Aurifil swag!

I offer many different workshops including online presentations focusing on a variety of techniques, including paper piecing, guided improv and faux curved piecing methods. You can see my patterns and workshops at www.tamarinis.com.
