Tina Curran
Home: Studio City, California
Tina Curran has been a quilter for over 20 years. She is known for her use of color and fun imagery in her quilts. Her work has earned multiple blue ribbons and the rank of Master Quilter at her local quilt guild.
Her quilts have hung in major shows including Road to California (Ontario, CA), the AQS show in Paducah, KY and the International Quilt Festival in Houston, TX.
Tina’s work has been featured more than 20 times in magazines (Quilters Newsletter and Quiltmaker) and in three books (including Ricky Tims’ “Kool Kaleidoscopes”).
She has been designing patterns since 2002, began giving quilt lectures in 2012 and started teaching her designs in quilt guild workshops in 2013. In 2015, she started a free monthly email newsletter to chronicle her adventures in quilting, which is read by thousands of quilters around the world. Her patterns are sold in her shop on Etsy.com (tinacurran.etsy.com) and to date have been bought by quilters in all 50 states and 23 foreign countries.
She offers two trunk shows. The first is a reimagined in-person show, now using photos. The second one features quilts no longer in her possession, so perfect for sharing using photos. Her popular design lecture demystifies the process with the hope to inspire others to design their own quilts. She also has a talk tracing her career path — from the advertising industry to the quilting industry, highlighting the joys and the challenges along the way.
All her workshops are project-based, helping students to make their own versions of her quilt designs. Her most popular is “Whimsical Garden,” where students make a floral fabric collage. With four versions of American flags quilts, her flag workshops are also popular, as is her “California Poppies” class. The details of the nine workshops that feature regular piecing and the seventeen that feature paper piecing can be found on the “Lectures and Workshops” page on her website.
Tina is an experienced presenter/teacher on Zoom. More information can be found on her website at www.tinacurran.com.
Please let Tina know that you found her on The Quilter’s Calendar.
Debi Warner
Deb is no longer with us and is sorely missed for her humor and talents. She brought light and laughter when we needed it most.
Home: Harlingen, Texas or on the road in our RV
Debi is a former librarian who became a quilter upon retirement. Debi’s favorite question is “What else can I do with this?” So, reverse applique brings butterflies and flower pounding gets wool applique and embroidery.
Because recycling is one of her passions, she quickly found ways to use leftover fabrics. From scrappy quilts to shirt aprons to Locker Hooking, she has found a use for every scrap. Her book Quilt Thrifting gets 4 stars and is free on Amazon Kindle Unlimited.
Debi and her husband went on the road to quilt shows all over the US in the summer of 2016. Her most popular demo in her booth was Locker Hooking. Making a matching rug from quilt scraps fascinated quilters. Even folks who didn’t make quilts were interested in using scrap fabric for rag rugs. Locker hooked rugs can be made from fabric scraps, yarn, t-shirt yarn, plastic bags, and wool roving.
Debi will show you how to make rugs, table runners, placemats, hot pads, barn quilts, and many other handy items. In this class, you will also learn to embellish your piece using ribbons and old jewelry.
Debi has taught this class for her own guild and for a quilt shop in Texas. She is Zoom ready. You can reach Debi at debi.warner1129 @ att.net.
I took the Locker Hooking class from Debi Warner through our quilt guild’s Schoolhouse classes, and though I had done Locker Hooking before, Debi added so much more to the class as far as technique and the history of the process, and enthusiasm.
Jan B.
Really liked this class, interesting teacher and a unique technic for using up scraps. You can also make designs, which I tried, but wasn’t too successful at, but it was a challenge and I enjoyed it.

Tales from a Quilting Contessa
Stories have been important throughout all history. In this slide presentation, Debi captures some of the 75+ stories that she has written for Quilting Hub as a Quilting Contessa. Her stories feature some history, some humor, and some quilting focusing in four main areas: How to, For guilds and Quilters, Tools, and Travel. Debi will share stories illustrated with photos and skits from her experiences.
Debi’s Bio
Author and humorist, Debi Warner, retired after many years as a clinical librarian and information specialist. She mainly worked on teaching physicians to use computers and electronic resources. She has a BA in French, and a Master’s in Library and Information Science.
She is a past president of Harlingen Proud, Arroyo Colorado Audubon, and the Sunshine Birding and Nature Club and uses her hobbies as an excuse for travel.
She took up quilting after retirement and chaired the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Show in 2019. She is known in her home Guild for her skits promoting the quilt show, including her appearance as the Grinch (with hair dyed green). She currently writes for Quilting Hub, an online resource. as one of the Quilting Comtesses.

Amy Friend
Home: West Newbury, Massachusetts
Amy Friend is a former museum curator turned designer. She designs modern quilts and specializes in paper pieced designs. Amy is also known for her fussy cutting and intentional piecing.
She authored the books Intentional Piecing (2016) and Improv Paper Piecing: A Modern Approach to Quilt Design (2017), and has a new book, Petal + Stem (2020).
Since 2019, Amy has run a paper pieced Block of the Month program each year. She is an award winning quilter and her quilts have been exhibited at a number of quilt shows as well as museums. Amy visits quilt guilds to speak about her quilts and to teach workshops. For those who can’t attend a workshop, Amy now offers online workshops for individuals.
Those can be found on her website at https://duringquiettime.com/online-workshops. Amy also offers programming virtually through Zoom. Please find a comprehensive list of lectures and workshops at https://duringquiettime.com/teaching-and-lectures.
Amy lives in Massachusetts with her husband and three children. If she isn’t sewing or spending time with the family, you might find her in the garden. You can follow her creative path on her blog, www.duringquiettime.com or on Instagram @duringquiettime.Quilt
Below: Variation of Daisy Chain from her book, Petal + Stem
An Introduction to the Modern Quilting Aesthetic. This approximately one hour lecture uses Amy’s quilts to introduce quilters to the characteristics of modern quilting as defined by the Modern Quilt Guild. Participants will learn about modern traditionalism, minimalism, negative space, alternate gridwork, improvisation and more.
Improv Paper Piecing: This approximately one hour lecture is based on a new approach to design that Amy presents in her second book, Improv Paper Piecing: A Modern Approach to Quilt Design. She shares quilts that illustrate how to approach paper pieced design improvisationally to create unique, modern quilts. (an on demand workshop by the same title is also available).
I selected Amy’s lecture/trunk show “Improv Paper Piecing” for our guild. As much as we wanted to go digital, none in our guild had used Zoom. Amy assured us that her presentation would work in the zoom platform and she guided me on how to use it. Everything went perfect. Her slide show is well photographed with highlighted photos, she staged her “Zoom Studio” with great lighting, sound and background. We had Q&A via chat and live and for our first “virtual” lecture everything was perfect. We would highly recommend Amy for your guild for online or in person lecture or class. Amy’s lecture was well prepared from content to presentation. Our members were delighted and are now asking if she can come to the guild to teach in person. We all hope that is possible.
