Jennifer Houlden

JenniferHoulden3Home: Barrie, Ontario, Canada

I have been quilting for just over ten years and it all started back in 2002 in Yellowknife, NWT. While living in Yellowknife I was very lucky to be able to take many classes from local instructors as well as from instructors the guild brought in from all over Canada and the USA. With a couple of trips to Quilt Canada and some amazing classes I was addicted to the art of quilting.

I began my designing career in Australia when we lived in the Outback. In 2010 I took several on-line classes with Ruth Blanchett, owner of Arbee Designs. My relationship with Arbee Designs developed from this and I have been designing quilt patterns for Ruth ever since. As well as designing for Arbee I also teach at The Academy of Quilting for them. While in Australia I developed my own label, Quilts by Jen.

Upon returning to Canada my company, Quilts By Jen, has developed and grown allowing me to design, write patterns, teach classes and put on trunk shows for local guilds and shops. Please visit Jen’s Website for more information and booking details.

Linda M Poole

March 14, 2013 by Rita

LindaMPooleHome: Milford, Pennslvania

My whole life has always revolved around photography, writing, painting, and sewing. These interests have fueled my passion for travel, teaching, and sharing my experiences with people around the world. I have taught throughout the USA, the United Kingdom, Germany, Turkey, and Italy. I believe language is never a barrier in the translation of quilts.

Let the things you see in my book be a springboard for your imagination. Each pattern gives you choices – use commercial fabrics, paint your fabric, or do both!

Linda Poole lives with her husband Ray Williams and Corgi pup Zoie near Milford, Pennsylvania, a beautiful region in the northeastern part of the state. Together they share the passion of discovering the gifts of nature while hiking trails that lead to creeks, brooks, rivers, and lakes. Ray can be found with his fishing pole in hand with Linda by his side clicking away with her camera. Visit Linda’s Website.

Author, teacher, and fabric designer, Nancy has enjoyed making quilts for over 25 years, during which time an impressive range of her beautiful quilts have been featured in over 110 national and international quilt magazines. She has also created over 80 quilt patterns for a variety of fabric manufacturers.

Nancy has authored 12 books since 2002, all have been published by Martingale. Her bestselling books include Appliqué Quilt Revival (2008), Quilt Revival (2006), Treasures for the 30s (2010), Fast, Fusible Flower Quilts (2011), and Kaleidoscope Paper-Piecing (2012). She has designed 14 fabric collections, including five 30s reproduction collections for P&B Textiles. Nancy is working on her next book and fabric collection.

Nancy enjoys combining traditional blocks and updated techniques to create dazzling quilts. Not considering herself a specialist in one particular area, Nancy’s favorite techniques include precision machine piecing, quilt design, and machine appliqué. Nancy has taught many workshops nationwide for guilds, shops, and conferences; including International Quilt Festival (Houston), Minnesota Quilter’s Conference, Kentucky Getaway, Road to California, A Mountain Quiltfest (Tennessee), and many more. Nancy believes making a quilt should be fun. In her classes, Nancy’s goal is for students to have a good time, learn something new, and make a quilt that they will enjoy for many years.

When she’s not designing and making quilts, Nancy enjoys traveling to guilds and events around the country, sharing her quilts, teaching her piecing and machine appliqué techniques, and visiting gardens.

Gyleen Fitzgerald

February 20, 2013 by Rita

Home: Churchville, Maryland

“I want children to be do-ers of life and not just watch-ers. I hope my writing inspires them to laugh and read out loud; one day it may lead to art and creative thinking.”

Fitzgerald was born in Philadelphia, PA but grew up in Taiwan and Japan. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering at Drexel University and opened Colourful Stitches in 1999. Its first subsidiary, FPI Publishing was launched in 2005 with the publication of her first two books. Its second subsidiary, Tools by Gyleen was launched in 2010 with the Pineapple Tool. In 2011, she obtained the Trademark for her Butterfly Seam.

Those formative years in the Far East developed her love for simplistic artistry. She began needlework at the very young age of 4 and has since pursued artistic expression in drawing and quilt making. Her quilts blend colour, pattern and texture to provide a contemporary essence to traditional quilting. Her strength as a quilter is demonstrated by the infusion of engineering tools and techniques to simplify visually complex quilts. Her writing life came much later; she started with technical reports, moved to technical instructions and finally got the courage to do creative organized thinking. Her written works center around Haiku poetry, Quilt project books, patterns and magazine articles and of course the crème de la crème, children’s books.

As an artist she has achieved “Best of Show” recognition; as a writer and publisher she has achieved award winning status with Quilts: Unfinished Stories with New Endings. Gyleen has appeared on The Quilt Show and Lifetime TV promoting finishing antique quilts and the new spirit of traditional quilting. Gyleen has an active social media presence on three Facebook group pages and in the Forum of The Quilt Show’s website.

For Gyleen, quilting is the passion which colours her world as her writing journey continues.

Visit Gyleen’s website.
