I specialize in pieced pictorial quilts. My designs are rooted in the traditions of 19th century patchwork quilts but I use unusual fabric selections that bring these quilts to life. I create designs from photographs and have pioneered the idea of “Gesture” in quilts. This design process links the insights of photographic composition to the elements of pieced pictorial quilts. This process guides the placement of seams that create visual impact in a pieced quilt design.
I have been offering virtual lectures and teaching virtual workshops for several years. My lecture “Visualizing Quilts” is a 50 minute powerpoint presentation done in a Zoom meeting. I answer questions at the end of my talk also spend a few minutes showing some of my quilts that are hung up in my studio as a trunk show. The lecture is open to all your Guild members.
As a bonus to my lecture, I also offer a free demonstration of a block design using the freezer paper template method that I use. This demo can be scheduled as part of a Guild meeting or as a separate Zoom meeting.
My live virtual workshops feature my patterns. I present step-by-step instructions on how on my designs work and how to prepare the freezer paper templates. We also discuss fabric choices and how printed fabric contribute to the overall look of your quilt. My workshops are offered as several separate Zoom meetings. Dividing the workshop into several meetings provides focused time to learn the technique and discuss fabric selections. The time between meetings allows everyone a chance to work on their projects and still have multiple opportunities to ask questions as they work. I can tailor this virtual format to meet the needs of your Guild.
In addition to teaching at quilt guilds and quilt retreats throughout the US and Canada, I have offered workshops at:
